Overview

Pip confirms that Naomi kept locked therapy diaries and wrote about the hit-and-run, giving Pip a plausible route by which the secret could have been discovered. The realization sharpens Pip's suspicion and pushes her from investigation into direct action.

After a brief emotional moment at home with her mother over memories of Barney, Pip lies to everyone around her, including Ravi, so she can pursue the Wendover address alone. Her decision raises the stakes because she is deliberately cutting off help just as she moves toward a possible confrontation.

Summary

Pip rushes to Naomi Ward's house and abruptly asks whether Naomi has been in therapy since her mother's death and whether her therapist told her to keep a diary. Naomi confirms both, explaining that journaling has helped her manage anxiety and depression since she was sixteen.

Pip then asks if Naomi wrote about the hit-and-run. Naomi admits that she did because she was devastated and could not talk to anyone, but insists no one ever sees the locked diaries hidden in her room. Pip realizes the diaries may explain how someone learned the secret and leaves despite Naomi calling after her.

At home, Pip finds her mother, Leanne, crying while watching old videos of Barney. Pip briefly sets aside the investigation to comfort her, and they look through photos and videos of the family dog together until Leanne leaves to pick up Josh.

Pip then lies again, saying she is going upstairs to nap while actually waiting for the right time to act. Her fear turns into anger, and because Thursday is a tutoring day, she hopes the person she is targeting will be where she expects.

After five o'clock, Pip tells her mother she is going to Lauren's, then gets into the car. She replies to Ravi's worried messages by lying that she will come to his house after dinner so they can call the police together, knowing Ravi would try to stop her. Instead, Pip enters 42 Mill End Road, Wendover, into the map app and begins driving there alone.
