Overview

Pip and Ravi visit the Ivy House Hotel and gain imperfect but persuasive confirmation that Andie stayed there, strengthening the theory that Andie met a secret older man in private. The discovery narrows the suspect pool by making Howie Bowers less likely to be that secret lover, because he lived alone and would not have needed a hotel.

The chapter ends with a major new contradiction: Pip sees Max Hastings angrily meeting Howie, despite Max claiming he had no connection to Andie’s dealer. This revelation ties two suspicious figures together and shifts Pip’s attention back toward Max.

Summary

Pip travels by train to Little Chalfont, unable to focus on her Margaret Atwood essay because her thoughts keep returning to Andie Bell. Ravi meets Pip at the station, and they walk to the Ivy House Hotel, the place Pip believes matches the bathroom in Max Hastings’s hidden photo of Andie.

At the hotel, Pip and Ravi meet the elderly owner, who says she ran the hotel with her late husband, David, five years earlier. When Pip asks about reservation records, the owner explains that David handled the old spreadsheets and that his computer has since been thrown away, leaving no useful records from 2012.

Pip shows the owner a printed photo of Andie. The owner recognizes Andie and says Andie has been at the hotel, but then insists the visit happened only a few weeks ago. Pip and Ravi are unsettled because Andie has been dead for five years, and the owner becomes distressed and confused.

The owner’s grandson, Henry Hill, interrupts and explains that his grandmother has Alzheimer’s and often confuses the timing of events. Henry says she may be remembering Andie from five years ago, and although he cannot provide records, her recognition gives Pip and Ravi support for their theory that Andie stayed at the Ivy House Hotel.

Back in Kilton, Pip and Ravi reason through the implications. If Andie met her secret older man at a hotel, that man likely could not bring Andie to his own home, which points toward someone living with family or a wife, such as Daniel da Silva or Max Hastings. Because Howie Bowers lived alone, Pip concludes Howie is probably not the secret older man, though he could still be connected to Andie’s death.

As Pip and Ravi reach Pip’s car, Pip sees Howie Bowers standing near the fence with Max Hastings. Max appears angry, contradicting his claim that he did not know Andie’s dealer and had not bought drugs in Kilton after Andie disappeared. Pip drives away before Max or Howie notice them, realizing that Max and Howie know each other.
