Overview
Pip confronts Daniel da Silva indirectly at a community policing meeting and finds him evasive when asked about old party drugging reports, his relationship with Jason Bell, and his search of the Bell house. Daniel accidentally reveals that he handled Max Hastings’s car-crash report, which may have given him knowledge of the hit-and-run blackmail.
The chapter raises Daniel’s importance as a suspect while also showing that Stanley Forbes remains uncomfortably close to the investigation’s orbit. Daniel and Stanley’s private conversation after the meeting leaves Pip and Ravi feeling watched and at risk.
Summary
Pip attends a dull community policing meeting at the library so she can question Daniel da Silva, one of the officers present. She watches him carefully while he answers local complaints, including a question from Stanley Forbes of the Kilton Mail, who is also in attendance.
After the meeting, Pip approaches Daniel and tries to appear casually interested in law and crime. She asks whether Daniel remembers reports from five or six years earlier about drug use and drink spiking at Kilton Grammar parties. Daniel says he does not remember and asks whether Pip is reporting a crime.
Pip then asks about Max Hastings. Daniel says he knows the Hastings family because his first solo call-out after training was when their son crashed his car into a tree and needed a police report for insurance. Pip recognizes this as important because Max’s crash may connect Daniel to knowledge of the 2011 hit-and-run blackmail.
Pip presses Daniel about his role as a first responding officer when Andie Bell was reported missing and asks whether searching the Bell home was a conflict of interest because of Daniel’s closeness to Jason Bell. Daniel becomes defensive, insists he is professional in uniform, and ends the conversation.
Daniel’s pregnant wife, Kim, interrupts with a pointed comment suggesting suspicion or jealousy about Daniel talking to a young girl. Daniel leads Kim away. Outside, Pip tells Ravi that Daniel reacted badly but revealed a possible link to the hit-and-run through Max’s crash report.
As Pip and Ravi prepare to leave, Daniel and Stanley exit the library together in a hushed conversation. Stanley notices Pip and Ravi, and Daniel stares hard at Pip, making the encounter feel more threatening. Ravi takes Pip’s hand and urges them to go.
