Pip investigates Daniel da Silva online but finds almost nothing useful beyond the fact that Daniel married in September 2011. This lack of information leaves Daniel as an uncertain lead rather than a confirmed suspect.

Pip reasons that if Daniel was Andie Bell’s secret older lover, Andie could have endangered Daniel in two serious ways: by exposing an affair to Daniel’s new wife or by reporting Daniel for statutory rape based on their rumored earlier relationship. Because Andie was capable of blackmail, Pip sees a possible motive for Daniel to kill Andie.

Pip also considers Daniel’s position as a police officer. If Daniel was involved, Daniel might have used access to the investigation to steal or tamper with evidence, either to protect Daniel or possibly Natalie da Silva. Pip connects this suspicion to Daniel’s hostility toward Ravi when Ravi asked questions about Sal Singh.

After rechecking newspaper reports and police-search photos from Andie’s disappearance, Pip cannot clearly identify Daniel among the investigating officers. However, one Sunday morning photo shows an officer entering Andie’s house from behind, and the officer’s hair matches Daniel’s appearance at the time. Pip cannot confirm the identification, but the possibility is enough for Pip to add Daniel to the suspect list.
