Pip reflects that questioning Becca Bell was a mistake because Becca is grieving and has no obligation to revisit Andie’s murder. Pip also recognizes the risk to her EPQ: if Mrs Morgan learns Pip approached Becca outside acceptable boundaries, the project could be disqualified, though Pip admits that may no longer stop her.

Because Pip still lacks insight into Andie’s home life and considers approaching Andie’s parents impossible, Pip searches for another source. Pip investigates Becca’s old Facebook activity and identifies Jess Walker, who appeared to be Becca’s close friend in 2012 before their shared photos abruptly stopped.

Pip hopes Jess may be emotionally distant enough from Andie’s death to talk, while still knowing enough about the Bell household to answer important questions. While scrolling through Jess’s old photos, Pip accidentally likes a five-year-old picture, then unlikes it, realizing Jess will probably still receive the notification.

Embarrassed by the accidental like, Pip decides to send Jess a private message and ask for a phone interview, turning a clumsy mistake into a new investigative approach.
