Overview
Isla tells Oro that Grim chose Cronan, even as she insists Grim still loves her. Oro’s unspoken visions weigh on them, but a sudden cascade of portals announces Cronan’s invasion. The prophecy tightens: Isla, Oro, or Grim will wield the Heartblade; one will die, and one will save or destroy the world.
Summary
Isla, reeling from loss yet relieved to find Oro, admits that Grim chose Cronan. She clings to proof of Grim’s love—the bridge between them she felt in the forest—and the belief that fear of the Heartblade’s vision swayed him.
Oro, heavy with regret, refuses to voice the futures he has seen. Isla senses his silence as confirmation that their paths are fraught, and tension spikes as if they might be forced into opposition.
Before either can decide what to do, the sky tears open. Dozens of portals bloom overhead—Cronan’s conquered worlds opening upon them—signaling the start of invasion. Isla quickly tallies the stakes: Cronan needs her dead for the diamond, and only the dagger could bypass Lark’s power within her.
Isla recognizes that the Threads of Time and their galaxy-crossing choices have fractured fate. The original prophecy has shifted; it may no longer be solely about her. Now, the decisive actors are Isla, Oro, and Grim.
As the rifts multiply, Isla accepts a stark triad of outcomes: one of the three will wield the Heartblade, one will die by it permanently, and one will either save the world or doom it. Everything narrows to a single endpoint—“a blade through the heart”—with the remaining question of whose heart it will be.
