Chapter 54 — Isla

Isla sits in a damp cell after Cronan’s ultimatum: join him—abandon her world and kill Oro—or die. She mourns the shattered hope that surged when Grim arrived, only for his erased memories to turn him against her. Isla feels cornered, powerless, and alone.

Lark, maimed and deteriorating, taunts Isla’s weakness and recounts her own millennia entombed in darkness. When Isla asks why Lark cannot break free, Lark explains that Cronan’s connection to this world is absolute; he is woven into its fabric. Though Isla argues Lark also belongs to this world, Lark says Cronan has poisoned it in her absence.

Isla presses for exceptions, and Lark concedes Cronan cannot yet control the storms—other worlds bleeding in—and suggests his grip is not total. Isla recalls Cronan’s admission that the diamond resists him and that he is locked out of her world, recognizing small but critical weaknesses. Yet with only three weeks until Cronan consumes her world, despair closes in.

Seeking strength, Isla sinks into memory through the silver pool in her mind and revisits training with Oro—turning ash to seedlings and fear to strength. In that remembered bond, she hears Oro’s voice: “Find your fire.” Taking those words as embers, Isla reignites her resolve. She vows not to flicker out but to ignite—and to burn Cronan.
