Chapter 33 — Grim
Overview
Grim and Oro identify Isla’s lost storm-capturing ring as the needed living piece from Skyshade to open a portal. They recruit Wraith and Lynx for the search, with Wraith overcoming his grief to fly again. The team’s resolve solidifies, launching an urgent hunt that could enable Isla’s rescue.
Summary
Grim processes Oro’s new requirements to open a portal to Skyshade: vast energy, a living piece from the otherworld, and combined Sunling, Nightshade, and Wildling power. When Oro wonders how to obtain something living from Skyshade, Grim remembers Isla’s earlier plan to trap storm in a ring—an object she lost during a near-fatal flight.
Grim explains the ring’s significance: it captured a shred of tempest, making it a viable living fragment of Skyshade. Determined to find it, Grim proposes enlisting Isla’s bonded animals to track it.
They portal to the stables, where Lynx lashes out at Grim, reflecting blame for Isla’s disappearance, but shows deference to Oro. Grim turns to Wraith, who has refused to fly since Isla vanished. Appealing to their shared grief and goal to bring Isla back, Grim coaxes Wraith to unfurl his wings.
With purpose renewed, the group organizes the search: Grim rides Wraith to scan from the skies, while Oro rides Lynx to follow Isla’s scent and the ring’s trail. United by urgency and a clear target, they launch the hunt to recover the ring and advance the portal plan.
