Chapter 50 — Oro
Overview
Oro, Zed, Enya, and Calder confront a mountain-sized, energy-manipulating beast tearing open the sky. After coordinated assaults fail, Enya is swallowed, forcing Oro to rip through the monster to rescue her alive. They kill the creature, but its power terrifies Oro, sharpening the stakes as he awaits Isla’s return and more attacks.
Summary
Roused by a thunderous impact, Oro senses the entire island has been struck and rushes into the night with Zed. They witness the sky torn open by titanic, cliff-like teeth belonging to a mountain-sized, obsidian-scaled creature that manipulates energy and storms, threatening both the isles and the newlands.
Enya joins with crackling fire-wings, while Calder rises from the sea, shaping a seablade of water and ice. Calder’s colossal strike collapses under the creature’s energy pulse, and the beast begins tracking him. Zed distracts it with blinding speed, shredding scales and buying Oro and Enya a window to unleash converging infernos.
Enya forges her wings into a single flaming sword and carves deep, as Zed pins the monster with wind and Oro hammers its weak points. The beast’s scales silver and it detonates a devastating energy burst. Enya’s flames and wings fail; she plummets and is swallowed before anyone can reach her.
Driven by fury, Oro bores through the creature’s armor and body, finds Enya alive, and shields her as he erupts back out through its teeth. The monster crashes, half into sea, half into forest, dead. Reunited on the beach with Zed and Calder, the group trades strained relief while Oro fixates on the creature’s terrifying control of power and worries more assaults will follow as he longs for Isla’s return.
