Chapter 39 — Isla
Overview
Imprisoned by Cronan, Isla repeatedly enters the inner silver pool to test alternate outcomes. She learns her past “mistakes” prevented far greater catastrophes—especially if she hadn’t saved Grim. Guided by the pool’s woman to seek forgiveness and clarity, Isla resolves to contact the souls within her and approaches a familiar silver‑haired figure.
Summary
While Cronan continues his efforts to break her, Isla retreats into the silver pool within her mind. She explores countless alternate paths—growing up with her parents, never portaling to Grim or Celeste, never being saved by Oro—seeking clarity on how her choices shaped the world.
Fixating on her deepest regret, Isla asks what would have happened if she had never saved Grim from the dreks or destroyed the village. The vision shows Grim dying, the dreks overrunning Nightshade and then every realm. Azul falls and Skyling kind perish; Cleo flees beneath the sea after heavy losses; Wildlings are slaughtered despite bonded beasts; Lightlark is devastated, and Oro is killed as the island falls.
Shocked back to the surface of the pool, Isla hears the woman’s counsel: she has saved more than she has destroyed, but must forgive herself to choose wisely next. Though shame persists, Isla recognizes that perfection is impossible and that many endings are inevitable despite changed choices.
Choosing to use the past to fix the future, Isla resolves to forgive herself and those who hurt her, and to seek help from the souls within her. She follows the woman’s guidance to speak with them, steps into a familiar room, and confronts a familiar figure with long, silver hair.
