Chapter 44 — Isla

Overview

Isla lets Cronan invade her mind to anchor a counterattack, wounds him, and identifies his crown as the source of his power. After wearing it to unlock her own strength, she learns her soul is matched to both Grim and Oro and chooses Grim. She shatters Cronan’s crown and Grim arrives to save her, but Cronan erases Grim’s memories of Isla, severing their bond and reversing their advantage.

Summary

Isla submits to Cronan’s mental invasion to conserve strength and study his method, discovering the link forms a bridge she can exploit. She shapes an energy blade, breaks his hold, stabs his shin, and assembles shards of her father’s armor into a shield that rebounds Cronan’s shadows into his own mind.

With Cronan crippled, Isla claims his crown—the object binding his power—and feels it surge through her, unlocking her suppressed Wildling abilities. In a vision of the silver pool, she sees Grim and Oro reaching for her. A silver woman reveals that in cosmic upheaval, souls are paired, and Isla uniquely has two perfect matches. The woman warns Isla’s soul will keep splitting until she dies or kills one of them, urging a choice.

Refusing to view fate as fixed, Isla nevertheless resolves to choose. She reaches for one—Grim—and forges a stronger bridge. Returning to the chamber, she hurls Cronan’s crown away and shatters it, agonizing him. Cronan tackles her, nearly taking the diamond at her throat, until a vast power cleaves the sky.

Grim crashes into the room, scattering knights and focusing solely on Isla. Their reunion completes the bond, and they move to join forces against Cronan. At the brink of contact, Cronan slips into Grim’s mind and eradicates all memories of Isla.

Grim’s shadows vanish, his recognition gone. Isla reaches for their bond and finds nothing—the connection forged by countless trials is severed. Cronan’s laughter echoes in her mind as the chapter ends with their advantage destroyed and Isla’s love and plan abruptly broken.
