Chapter 17 — Isla
Overview
A mysterious silver-haired woman halts the wood-women and brings Isla to the Forgotten Forest’s silver pool to confront her past and renew her dwindling life-force. She affirms Isla’s strength and warns that Cronan is coming. The vision ends; Lark restrains the warriors as Cronan arrives, annihilating the forest and escalating the threat.
Summary
As the wood-women close in, time seems to still. A radiant silver-haired woman appears, effortlessly scattering the warriors and guiding Isla to a secluded grove with a silver pool. She implies deep knowledge of Isla’s ancient prophecy and says the Forgotten Forest selects those who must remember.
At the pool, Isla relives her brutal upbringing and breaks down. The woman comforts her, reframing Isla’s past as forged strength and promising that Isla’s capacity has no limit. Acknowledging Isla’s fading life-force, she offers silver water that briefly restores Isla’s energy and urges her to use her past as a guide.
The woman hints Isla can “see the end” when ready and warns that night turns to day, then suddenly senses an approaching presence—Cronan. The grove and pool vanish, leaving Isla back amid the frozen wood-women.
Lark, revived, is revealed to be holding the army at bay, storming above as she forces the warriors back into the trees. Thunderous booms shake the world; the wood-women retreat. A wave of darkness levels the forest to ash and forms into Cronan, confirming the imminent, overwhelming danger.
