Chapter 85 — Isla

Isla, newly immune to Cronan’s poison after carving his skyre into her palm, shatters her cell and escapes his castle. Realizing storms are portals powered by Cronan, she channels lightning to portal herself to the hidden Forgotten Forest, a refuge that once required invitation. There she deliberately summons Grim with her necklace, determined to reach him before Cronan invades their dying world.

Grim arrives enraged, attacking with shadow chains. Isla counters and presses her hand to his heart, plunging them into a sequence of their shared memories. As they fight through scenes—Nightshade’s castle, the market, the prison, her room, the dragon-fire cave, the village where she died—Isla duels Grim with fire, water, stars, and shadows, forcing him to witness their bond and sacrifices. Their blades begin to merge, constellations forming where darkness meets starlight, signaling his memories are returning even as his anger grows.

Isla drops her guard and confesses her love, invoking their vow of the infinite. Grim finally remembers and reaches for her—then coldly says he does not care. In that moment Cronan arrives, having followed them into the forest. He withers the glade to ash and floats a shadow dagger at Grim’s heart, warning Isla that any resistance will kill Grim.

Cronan seizes Isla’s body, forcing her hand to grasp the dagger aimed at Grim. With the prophecy hanging on a single move, Cronan gives her an ultimatum: take him to the Pool of Possibilities or be made to kill her husband. Isla, powerless under his control and with Grim’s life at stake, is left with an impossible choice.
