Chapter 19 — Oro
Overview
Oro jolts Grim out of grief by reminding him that his life is bound to Isla’s and that Cronan is closing in. Refusing to accept Isla’s loss, Oro amplifies his power to shift the tides and reveal an ancient water portal. Grim attempts to open it but fails, proving they need something more.
Summary
Oro reflects on how love has sustained him through centuries of hardship and refuses to accept Isla’s disappearance. Seeing Grim collapse in grief, Oro slaps and confronts him, arguing that if Isla were dead, Grim—whose life is bound to hers—would be dead too. The threat snaps Grim from paralysis, restoring his focus.
Oro emphasizes the urgency: Cronan will find Isla, and their only chance is to fight. Though devastated, Oro resolves to act. He silently vows his love to Isla and commits to being the strength she needs.
Calling on the sea despite not being the strongest Moonling, Oro forces the tides to surge and refill the island’s pools until one glows an uncanny blue. Azul lifts them on the wind to observe; they land near the luminescent basin, identifying it as their portal.
Grim wades into the water and uses his shadows to force the passage, straining until exhaustion. Nothing opens. Grim’s fury erupts, confirming Azul’s husband’s warning: the pool and Grim’s flair alone are insufficient. Oro suppresses his grief again, determined to find whatever missing element will turn the pool into a working portal.
