Chapter 42 — Oro
Overview
In a dream meeting, Oro and Isla confirm the portal is nearly ready but requires Isla’s Wildling power to restore the bonds. Isla agrees to help tomorrow, yet will bring only one ally, forcing a pivotal choice that safeguards their realms while narrowing the rescue.
Summary
Oro meets Isla in a dream and, for a moment, his burdens fade. He reflects on their fraught history—fights, vulnerability, and healing—and renews his resolve to be with her despite the risks and her past choice of Grim.
Oro confirms they have assembled the portal’s requirements: the tide pool, Cinder’s energy, a ring carrying a living shred from Skyshade, and the place’s true name. He explains they still need Isla’s Wildling abilities to restore the bonds and complete the bridge to reach her.
When Oro asks if Isla has changed her mind about keeping them out, Isla says she has and sets the attempt for tomorrow. However, she adds a condition: she will bring only one of them, insisting the other must remain to protect their people.
Oro understands the stakes and asks if she has chosen. Isla has not. The dream ends with Oro clinging to hope that he will see her soon, while accepting the looming, consequential decision.
