Chapter 12 — Isla
Overview
Isla is forced to relive a childhood of brutal training, isolation, and shame under Terra, with only Poppy’s brief comfort and secret keepsakes of her mother. Snapped back to the cursed forest, Isla confronts a weakened Lark as the woods trap them in memories. Learning the only escape is through, Isla chooses pragmatic cooperation and leads Lark forward, signaling a fraught alliance for survival.
Summary
As a child, Isla duels her guardian Terra at sunrise. Terra’s relentless blows leave Isla bleeding and concussed, while accusations that Isla will ruin the Wildlings deepen her fear that her powerlessness dooms the realm. Even after collapsing, Terra forces her to train through the night before allowing healing.
Later, Poppy tends Isla’s wounds with gentleness that contrasts Terra’s cruelty. Alone, Isla hides mementos of her mother—a petaled doll, a broken comb, a paintbrush—and yearns to know her. Confined to her quarters to conceal her lack of power, Isla falls asleep clutching the brush, wishing to pierce time’s veil.
The memory dissolves. Back in the cursed forest, Isla startles as a battered Lark appears. Isla considers striking with Cronan’s blade and the god-bone, but Lark warns it would not kill her and insists she does not lie. Lark admits the woods force travelers to relive the past and says the only exit is through.
When Lark freezes, mind snared by her own memories, Isla recognizes the danger of being lost to the forest. Prioritizing survival over vengeance, Isla takes Lark’s arm, picks a direction, and leads them forward, forging a tenuous partnership amid mutual peril.
