Chapter 1 — Oro
Overview
Isla sacrifices herself by entering a secret portal to the founders’ realm to confront the unstoppable Lark Crown. Grief drives Grim to attack Oro, but their shared love for Isla forces a truce. Enemies become allies, vowing to cross worlds to retrieve her despite their fractured land and history.
Summary
Oro Rey watches Grim Malvere weep at the charred maze center where Isla vanished, clutching a feather—the only trace left—while Lynx, Isla’s bonded panther, roars and claws at the spot. Oro realizes Isla opened a hidden portal to the founders’ otherworld to save Lightlark from Lark Crown, who cannot be killed here.
Hours pass without Isla’s return. Overwhelmed, Grim suddenly punches Oro, igniting a brutal, powerless fistfight within the maze’s constraints. They trade blows until Grim pins Oro with a blade to his throat, torn between grief and fury as Lynx hesitates, unwilling to risk harming Isla’s bond.
Instead of striking, Grim demands the truth: does Oro love Isla? Oro admits he does. Rather than rage, Grim shows relief and declares he will retrieve Isla, insisting Oro help. He sheathes his weapon and offers his hand, stating he loves Isla more than he hates Oro.
Oro, recalling his devotion to Isla beyond possession, accepts. Centuries of enmity and broken friendship yield to a shared purpose. The chapter ends with Oro and Grim forging an alliance, knowing their world is fracturing but believing only together can they reach the other realm and bring Isla back.
