Chapter 3 — Grim
Overview
Unable to sleep, Grim recalls how he sought Infinite—the universe’s strongest diamond—after proposing to Isla. On Atlas, he endures a harrowing climb through visions of his massacres and a confrontation with his dead sister, Laila, while a sentient force tests his motives.
Affirming his love as “infinite,” Grim claims the gem to protect Isla, foreshadowing that greater dangers still await her.
Summary
Late at night, Grim refuses to rest until Isla is found and remembers the night he chose to claim Infinite for her after asking her to marry him. Knowing all previous claimants—including his father—were destroyed, he travels to Atlas, breaches its coastal shield by boat, and steps onto a land that strips his senses and warns him to turn back.
Defying the warning, Grim begins a jagged ascent and is forced to relive centuries of killings, including executing a pleading soldier, confronting the remorse he long suppressed to survive his father’s wars and his siblings’ deaths. He presses on, anchored by love for Isla, treating her memory as a lifeline against the relentless tide of guilt.
Near the summit, Grim is thrust into a childhood vision of his sister Laila, whom he accidentally killed at twelve. She accuses him of abandoning duty for love and physically shoves him off the edge; Grim barely arrests his fall and resumes climbing, battered but resolute to save Isla.
A sentient voice assaults him with a storm and Isla’s most damning memories—her catastrophic losses and the village she destroyed—calling her a monster. Grim counters that he loves Isla at her worst as fiercely as at her best, declaring their love infinite. The wind ceases as the voice probes his soul, demanding his true desire; Grim answers he wants only Isla, forever.
He hauls himself into a cave where the black diamond waits. Assured it will grant his greatest wish—togetherness forever—Grim claims Infinite, feeling its ancient, boundless power. He believes the ordeal was worth it to safeguard Isla, even as he senses her greatest challenges are still to come.
