Chapter 47 — Isla

Overview

Isla escapes Grim, who hunts her after Cronan erases Grim’s memories of their bond. She finds brief refuge in a crater oasis, learning how Cronan’s rule has crushed ordinary lives. Fearing discovery, she leaves and reaches Oro through their soul-bridge. Oro confirms the crisis and reveals Grim’s sole weakness: Isla herself.

Summary

Isla flees through a small portal as Grim’s shadows close in, realizing Cronan has permanently erased Grim’s memories of her. She crashes into an ash desert without water or power and spots a crater oasis. To avoid leading Grim or Cronan’s knights to her, she severs her bridge to Grim and heads toward the village.

In the market, a woman named Jessel offers Isla water and shelter. Inside Jessel’s underground home, Isla meets two orphaned boys, Prelis and Agor, and learns the village reveres its few surviving trees and a dwindling sacred pool. Jessel explains scavenger factions wield storm power via artifacts and that resistance to Cronan has been fatal, including the boys’ parents.

Grieving her failures, Isla rests, then quietly departs to protect Jessel’s family from the danger following her. Alone in an alley, she breaks down over Grim’s lost love and the impossibility of returning home without his portaling power.

Reaching for any remaining bond, Isla discovers her connection to Oro is intact and stronger in this world. She finds Oro mid-battle, holding a wall against monstrous beasts spilling through the tide-pool portal. Overwhelmed by his sorrow—amplifying his power—Oro asks after Grim, and Isla reveals the memory erasure and that Grim now hunts her.

Knowing she must face Grim to regain access to portal magic, Isla asks Oro for Grim’s battle weakness. As the vision frays, Oro answers that Grim has only one: Isla. The connection collapses as a scavenger passes the alley, leaving Isla to confront what this means for her survival and the fight to return home.
