Chapter 91 — Oro
Overview
Through the reawakened tide pool, survivors pour back onto the island, including Cleo’s son and a transformed Isla. Oro’s love calms Isla’s overwhelming power, but his fear of a ruinous future lingers. The chapter ends with Oro demanding Isla’s news of Grim, signaling new stakes for their alliance.
Summary
Oro senses Isla racing toward him and portals to the tide pool he and Grim created. He finds Cleo waiting in tense silence. The waters erupt as energy crashes into the pool, widening it into a vast, midnight-dark crater that disgorges gasping survivors.
Cleo reaches into the black water and pulls out her son alive, her joy unleashing towering waves over the island. At the center, Isla rises, transformed—eyes glowing, hair whipping, clad in unfamiliar armor and wielding an unnameable metal sword—radiating power that confirms Oro’s terrifying visions of ruin.
Despite his dread, Oro calls her “Love,” and the word steadies Isla: her glow dims, her hair settles, and she seems disoriented before collapsing. Oro catches her, overcome, and tells Isla she is home, noting the green has returned to her eyes.
As relief collides with foreknowledge of catastrophe, Oro forces the question that will shape their next move: he asks where Grim is, leaving Isla’s answer—and Grim’s fate—as the pressing uncertainty.
