Chapter 49 — Grim

Grim locates Isla in a desert village by her crimson aura and confronts her, only to be stabbed as she anticipates his portal. He chases Isla onto the dunes, confirming she lacks power without a storm. When a tempest rises, they clash—her Sunling fire against his shadows—as Isla insists he once loved her and gives her name: Isla.

A storm funnel sweeps them to a shifting, frozen peak where Isla counters his portals, references the Algid, and claims he confided in her about his past and sister. Instead of finishing him, Isla heals his stab wound, recalling moments of tenderness and sacrifice he cannot remember. Grim rejects this, nearly kills her, and another storm hurls them onward.

In a shattered forest, Isla channels emotion to rip trees from the earth and forges a massive blade to breach his defenses. Grim drops his own emotional barriers, intrigued yet resolute, and pins her—until their contact splits the storm and lightning hurls him into her memory: a battlefield where he grieves her corpse.

Staggered by the vision, Grim and Isla spill onto a ruined shore. Isla is knocked unconscious and sinks; despite wanting Infinite, Grim values answers more. He pulls her from the water and portals them both back to Cronan, choosing inquiry over execution.
