Chapter 22 — Grim

Overview

Reeling from Isla severing their bonds, Grim and Oro confront their grief and stop fighting each other. They acknowledge past betrayals, exchange apologies, and agree Isla needs them aligned. Forming a fragile truce, they plan to reach Isla; Grim departs for Nightshade to seek a way to open a portal.

Summary

Grim feels the sudden absence of his link to Isla and, despite wanting death, realizes Isla must still be alive. He concludes she severed the connection to protect them and that Cronan has likely found her, intensifying his resolve to reach her.

On a cliff above raging tide pools, Grim and Oro sit battered and desperate. Oro insists they must stop fighting, acknowledging that Isla needs them aligned. The shared despair forces them to confront their history and the futility of their latest brawl.

Oro apologizes for not believing Grim about the curses, reopening the wound that ruined their friendship. Grim admits to plotting to kill Oro and starting a war, unapologetic because it was for Isla. Despite lingering distrust, both recognize their only path forward is unity.

Grim offers a truce, vowing not to harm Oro unless it helps save Isla. Oro accepts, and they agree to work together. Acting immediately, Grim resolves to find a way to open a portal, departing for Nightshade to search for answers and a route to Isla.
