Chapter 15 — Grim
Overview
Grim, Oro, and Azul enter a fog‑choked soul realm to contact Azul’s husband. Grim’s impatience to reach Isla spikes, and he briefly communes with his dead father, confirming he has claimed Infinite. The father’s soul dissipates after hearing this, and Grim realizes Oro and Azul have vanished in the mist.
Summary
Grim, Oro, and Azul portal into a bleak, storm-laden soul realm by following the resonance of a ring that belonged to Azul’s late husband. Grim, desperate to reach Isla, warns Azul to be quick, while Oro tempers the request. The oppressive fog and approaching thunder heighten Grim’s urgency and fear that every delay endangers Isla.
Straining through their weakening bond, Grim silently vows to Isla that he is coming. As Oro and Azul move off through the mist, Grim senses a familiar hollowness in the fog and is confronted by his father, the former ruler of Nightshade—now a fading shred of soul. The father asks a single question: whether Grim “claimed it.”
Grim answers yes, acknowledging he has claimed Infinite. His father’s rare flicker of pride stirs old bitterness, but Grim reflects that his rage has been eclipsed by the life and meaning Isla brings him; he claimed the diamond for his wife. With that assurance, his father’s remnant dissipates, as if released from a final tether.
Ready to leave, Grim turns to regroup—but Oro and Azul are gone, swallowed by the fog. The delay deepens the stakes: their mission to reach Isla is now jeopardized by separation within the perilous realm.
