Chapter 29 — Isla
Overview
Cronan brutally probes Isla’s mind, exposing visions where she kills Oro and Grim, confirming the prophecy’s threat. Isla expels him through defiance, but Cronan learns about the two keys to her lock and plans to lure her lovers. Isla remains imprisoned, and the stakes for rescue escalate.
Summary
Cronan subjects Isla to relentless psychic torture, wearing down her defenses by pain and silence until she surrenders trivial memories for brief relief. Exhausted, Isla slips and thinks of Oro and Grim, allowing Cronan to seize those memories.
He rifles through Isla’s most intimate moments, fixating on scenes of her unleashed power. Cronan shows Isla visions where she rips out Oro’s heart and destroys a village, then another where she stabs Grim through the chest on their wedding day. The horror of seeing herself fulfill the prophecy becomes a catalyst; instead of breaking, Isla’s defiance resurges and she forces Cronan out.
Back in the cell, Cronan taunts Isla about the king and his heir, recognizing their significance. When Isla spits in his face, he constricts her body and studies her, musing that her lock has two keys and wondering if Oro and Grim are searching for her.
Cronan orders a metal knight to drag Isla away, declaring he will turn her into whatever weapon he needs if he captures them. Isla is left imprisoned, shaken but unbroken, as Cronan sets a trap aimed at her lovers.
