Chapter 67
Overview
Cooper follows Debbie’s last known unfamiliar location to a dark house in Rockland and discovers what appears to be Debbie’s car outside. His frantic attempts to reach her reveal his desperation, regret, and fear that secrecy has cost him his marriage.
The chapter heightens the immediate stakes by placing Cooper near the scene where Debbie may be, while the lack of response suggests he may be too late to stop or save her.
Summary
Cooper searches a small area in Rockland using Debbie’s last unfamiliar recent location, even though Debbie has turned off location sharing and may no longer be there. As daylight fades, Cooper drives around with increasing urgency because finding Debbie feels like his only chance to fix what has gone wrong.
After about twenty minutes, Cooper finds a dead-end street with two houses: one abandoned-looking and one dark but apparently occupied. Cooper nearly leaves, but parked cars beside the second house catch his attention, especially a blue Subaru Outback that resembles Debbie’s car.
Cooper parks and walks closer because the house is too inaccessible by car. Cooper cannot confidently remember Debbie’s license plate, but after looking inside the Subaru, Cooper recognizes Debbie’s habit of leaving sunglasses in the cupholder. That detail convinces Cooper the car is Debbie’s.
Cooper goes to the dark house and rings the doorbell, but nothing happens. Cooper knocks, then bangs on the door with both fists, convinced Debbie must be inside because her car is there. Cooper wants to confess and repair their relationship, realizing that hiding the truth has only made things worse.
When no one answers, Cooper shouts Debbie’s name and declares that he loves her. The silence makes Cooper fear he has arrived too late.
