Chapter 63

Overview

Cooper discovers that his gun safe is empty, leading him to conclude that Debbie has taken his registered gun and is setting him up for Ken Bryant’s murder. This revelation transforms Cooper’s fear into certainty and raises the stakes from marital crisis to potential imprisonment.

While Cooper tries to reassure Izzy, his thoughts reveal how much he fears losing his daughters and how dependent the family has been on Debbie. He leaves again, believing he may know where to find Debbie, but unsure whether he can come back.

Summary

Cooper returns home and first checks on Lexi and Izzy, who are sitting together on the sofa and quietly supporting each other. Lexi, still visibly upset, asks whether Cooper has spoken to Debbie. Cooper says he has not, though he has been calling and texting Debbie without any response.

Cooper goes to the garage, unable to explain his suspicions to his daughters. He finds the leftover beer from Debbie’s unexplained six-pack and is tempted to drink, but decides he must stay clearheaded. He uncovers the gun safe beneath his worktable and opens it with the anniversary combination.

The safe is empty, confirming Cooper’s fear. Cooper connects the evidence: his angry argument with Ken Bryant, the missing company money, Ken’s shooting, the likelihood that Cooper’s registered gun was used, and the fingerprints Cooper left at Ken’s house. Cooper realizes Debbie is framing him for Ken’s murder.

Izzy enters the garage and asks what is happening, especially because she is worried about Debbie. Cooper hides the empty safe and tries to comfort Izzy, telling her Debbie will be okay even though Cooper does not know where Debbie is. The conversation makes Cooper think about prison, his daughters’ future, and how central Debbie has been to the family.

Cooper tells Izzy that he loves her, an unusual enough statement to alarm her further. Cooper then says he may know where to find Debbie and prepares to leave again, asking whether Izzy and Lexi can feed themselves from the groceries Debbie bought. Cooper promises to return soon, though he privately doubts whether he can keep that promise.
