Chapter 69
Overview
Debbie’s apparent final act shifts when the chapter reveals that Jesse is still alive and Debbie fired into the ceiling instead of killing him. Outside Harley’s house, Cooper’s concern and confessions create a rare moment of honesty between Cooper and Debbie, as Cooper admits alcoholism and Debbie reveals her college rape.
The chapter preserves Debbie’s danger through technical truths: Cooper suspects Debbie may have killed Ken, but Debbie denies using Cooper’s gun because Debbie used Jesse’s. Cooper believes Debbie, setting up an uneasy return home where police, therapy, and Debbie’s hidden crimes all remain unresolved.
Summary
Debbie leaves Harley’s house through the front door, removes her leather gloves, and leaves the gun behind as planned. Outside, Cooper has stopped shouting for Debbie and is preparing to break a window with a rock, so Debbie calls to him before Cooper can enter and discover the scene inside.
Cooper rushes to Debbie and embraces her, relieved because Cooper heard what sounded like a gunshot. Debbie knows Cooper heard the shot, but the bullet is in the ceiling and Jesse is still alive. Debbie lies that she heard nothing and suggests it may have been a car backfiring.
When Cooper asks why Debbie is there, Debbie gives a partly true explanation: a friend lives in the basement apartment, and Debbie came to see the friend but could not get an answer. Cooper accepts the story because Cooper does not know Harley well and has no reason to suspect Debbie harmed her.
Before they leave, Cooper insists on telling Debbie the truth. Cooper admits that he is an alcoholic, has known since college, and has secretly been attending AA meetings because Cooper felt ashamed and feared Debbie would think less of him. Debbie responds with her own long-hidden truth: Debbie was raped in college, which is why Debbie dropped out.
Cooper comforts Debbie and says they need couples therapy. Cooper then asks whether Debbie shot Ken Bryant with Cooper’s gun. Debbie truthfully swears that she did not, because Debbie used Jesse’s gun, and Cooper is relieved enough to believe her. Cooper says they should call the police when they get home and also asks about his missing gun; Debbie truthfully says she got rid of it, and Cooper agrees to go home with her.
