Epilogue
Overview
A year later, Cooper believes Jesse murdered both Ken and Harley, while Cooper and Debbie’s family, careers, and marriage appear to be recovering. Jesse’s prison narration reveals he was framed for those killings but is still a predator and murderer from Debbie’s past. Debbie finally confirms the full truth: she killed Ken and Harley, worked with Cindy to frame Jesse, and sees Jesse’s punishment as justice for the rape he committed against her.
Summary
One year later, Cooper makes breakfast and reflects on how much life has changed since Ken Bryant’s murder. Cooper has founded a successful accounting firm, convinced that Jesse Hutchinson killed Ken after stealing from the company and then murdered Harley because Harley was pressuring Jesse over their affair.
Cooper explains that Debbie called the police after supposedly finding Harley unreachable. The police caught Jesse at Harley’s apartment trying to clean the scene while Harley lay dead, and the evidence led to Jesse’s conviction for both Ken’s and Harley’s murders. Cooper refused to serve as Jesse’s character witness, and Jesse received two consecutive life sentences.
Cooper then considers his family’s improved life. Lexi has grown closer to Debbie and gone to a local elite college, Zane faces legal trouble after his accident, and Izzy continues to excel at soccer. Debbie has found career success after selling her app Punish Your Husband, has stopped being Dear Debbie, has answered her old advice emails more constructively, and is in therapy. Cooper and Debbie are also in couples therapy, trying to repair their marriage after both kept major secrets.
The narration shifts to Jesse in maximum-security prison, where he insists he did not kill Ken or Harley. Jesse remembers waking at Harley’s apartment with his gun in his hand and no memory of the killing, then making himself look guilty by trying to erase evidence. Jesse also recalls that evidence against him in Ken’s murder was devastating, including the gun match, footage placing him at Ken’s house, vanished text messages, and accusations that Jesse stole money.
As Jesse laments his conviction and isolation, Jesse’s self-pity gives way to a revelation: in college, Jesse drugged women and assaulted them. When Jesse’s cellmate Geho and other prisoners attack him, Geho says the beating is for Misty Cardon. Jesse remembers Misty as a woman who accused Jesse of rape and whom Jesse then killed to silence, proving Jesse is innocent of Ken and Harley’s murders but guilty of another murder.
The narration shifts to Debbie, who confirms that Cooper does not know the truth. Debbie killed Ken, framed Jesse, and later killed Harley; Jesse was the man who raped Debbie years earlier. At Titan Fitness, Debbie meets Cindy Bryant, who had once written to Dear Debbie about Ken’s financial abuse. Debbie helped Cindy escape, killed Ken to protect Cindy, and relied on Cindy to drug Jesse before Harley’s murder. Debbie and Cindy share an unspoken pact to protect each other, and Debbie ends determined that no one will take advantage of her again.
