Chapter 33

Overview

Cooper grows uneasy when Ken Bryant abruptly announces a spontaneous fishing trip by email, a break from Ken’s usual predictable habits. At the same time, Jesse’s comments about Debbie’s jealousy make Cooper confront how noticeable and troubling Debbie’s behavior has become. Cooper senses something is wrong with Ken’s disappearance but hesitates to act, leaving the suspicion hanging.

Summary

From Cooper’s point of view, the morning begins with an unsettling domestic detail: Debbie burns the pancakes, something Cooper says she has never done before. The mistake feels ominous to him, especially after the recent strain in their marriage and Debbie’s increasingly troubling behavior.

At work, Mrs. McCauley tells Cooper that Ken Bryant has announced by email that he is taking a sudden fishing trip for the rest of the week. Cooper is relieved not to face Ken after their recent conflict, but Mrs. McCauley warns that Ken asked her to monitor Cooper and the rest of the staff while he is gone.

In the break room, Cooper talks with Jesse, who observes that Cooper looks terrible. Cooper admits things have been strange and that Debbie is not handling the situation well. Jesse then recalls a past dinner when Debbie reacted coldly to a waitress who seemed to flirt with Cooper, deliberately made the waitress clean up a spill, and refused to tip properly. Jesse frames Debbie as jealous and intense, which makes Cooper uneasy.

Jesse mentions that Ken texted him to water Ken’s plants, a task Ken previously gave Cooper. This reinforces Cooper’s discomfort, because Ken’s sudden absence and electronic-only communication do not fit Ken’s usual habits. Cooper calls Ken, but the call goes to voicemail.

Cooper considers checking on Ken in person, suspecting that something may be wrong, but worries that appearing at Ken’s house could look inappropriate, especially given their tension. Cooper tries to reassure himself that Ken is fine and will return Monday, though his unease remains unresolved.
