Chapter 28

Overview

Cooper wakes disoriented and discovers Garrett Meers accusing Debbie of posting a sex video of Garrett and Sierra on the newspaper's website after Garrett fired Debbie. Cooper defends Debbie, but the accusation deepens Cooper's growing suspicion that Debbie may be behind a series of calculated retaliations. Debbie's calm denial and Cooper's decision to hide the address from the night before mark a widening fracture in Cooper's trust.

Summary

Cooper wakes in bed with a throbbing head, dry mouth, and a hungover feeling while a phone rings repeatedly. At first Cooper worries the call is coming to Cooper's own phone and might reveal something Debbie should not see, but Cooper realizes the ringing phone belongs to Debbie. Debbie is in the shower, unusually singing, so Cooper answers after the caller keeps trying.

The caller is Garrett Meers, Debbie's boss, who urgently demands Debbie. Garrett reveals that he fired Debbie after an issue involving a lawsuit, a fact Cooper did not know. Garrett says pornography has been posted on the newspaper's website, Debbie changed the password, and Garrett cannot remove it.

Cooper checks the Hingham Household website and finds a looping video of Garrett having sex with a woman who is not his wife, apparently in the newspaper office. Garrett panics because advertisers are canceling and his wife may see it. Cooper recognizes the accusation as similar to Brett accusing Debbie of tampering with his fuse box, and Cooper realizes Debbie has both the technical skill and possible motive, but Cooper still struggles to believe Debbie would act so maliciously.

When Garrett threatens that Debbie will pay, Cooper becomes protective and threatens to break Garrett's face if Garrett harms Debbie. Cooper hangs up and silences Debbie's phone. Debbie then comes out of the bathroom in a robe, looking vulnerable, and Cooper silently wonders about multiple suspicious events: Brett's fuse box, Garrett's video, Debbie's whereabouts, and what Debbie may be hiding.

Cooper shows Debbie the video instead of fully explaining it. Debbie calmly identifies the woman as Sierra, mocks Garrett's family-man image, and suggests someone may already have emailed Garrett's wife. When Cooper asks whether Debbie posted the video, Debbie denies it, asks where she would get such a video, and then casually says she is hungry and wants pancakes.

After Debbie leaves to make breakfast, Cooper notices the address Cooper scribbled the previous night, confirming that the night's events were not a dream. Because the handwriting is unclear and Cooper cannot be sure whether the street name says Main, Maple, or something else, Cooper hides the paper in the nightstand drawer before going to shower.
