Chapter 48
Overview
Debbie begins the morning by hiding signs of marital conflict and preserving the secret of her interference with Lexi’s phone. When Zane arrives furious, Debbie prevents him from exposing what happened the night before and uses the threat of child-pornography consequences to frighten him away from Lexi.
The chapter deepens Debbie’s pattern of controlling her family through deception while also achieving a practical victory: Zane backs down and cuts off contact. Lexi remains unaware that her mother engineered the confrontation, leaving Debbie temporarily in control of the household narrative.
Summary
The morning after Cooper sleeps on the couch, Debbie wakes him before Lexi and Izzy come downstairs so the girls will not discover the strain between their parents. Cooper goes upstairs exhausted and sore, while Lexi appears tired but calmer. Debbie is relieved that Lexi has not realized her phone was missing, because Debbie returned it to Lexi’s nightstand without waking her.
At breakfast, Izzy is cheerful because she is back on the soccer team and no longer has to deal with Coach Pike. Debbie makes egg muffins for herself and the girls, and both daughters accept her offer to drive them to school. Lexi, who is not wearing headphones, reminds Debbie that she has a physics test and cannot be late, showing a brief thaw in their interaction.
Lexi notices that Debbie has not made food for Cooper, but before Debbie can answer, the doorbell rings. Debbie nervously imagines several people who might be angry with her, then finds Zane at the door. Zane is furious because Debbie lured him out the night before, then blocked him on Lexi’s phone, leaving him unable to contact Lexi.
Debbie pretends ignorance and refuses to let Zane reach Lexi. When Zane calls Lexi a slur, Debbie turns the confrontation against him by describing the legal and prison consequences for an adult who distributes naked photos of a fifteen-year-old girl. Debbie frames Zane’s behavior as child pornography and emphasizes digital evidence, prison violence, and lifelong sex-offender registration.
Zane’s anger collapses into fear. He denies understanding at first, then retreats and asks Debbie to tell Lexi he can no longer drive her to school. Debbie cheerfully closes the door on him and returns to breakfast, telling Lexi the visitor was nobody important while keeping her manipulation hidden.
