Chapter 61
Overview
Cooper tries to cover his tracks at Ken’s house after discovering Ken’s body, but the discovery of a door camera makes Cooper realize the visit has been recorded. Cooper hopes the footage may actually help by proving Cooper arrived after Ken’s death, yet Cooper still delays calling police because Cooper needs to check the garage first.
The chapter deepens Cooper’s fear that the pattern surrounding Pike and Zane is closing in on Cooper, and Cooper’s secretive text before leaving suggests Cooper is taking urgent action rather than fully trusting the authorities.
Summary
Cooper realizes he must leave Ken’s house quickly after finding Ken dead. Although the fenced property may have hidden Cooper from neighbors, Cooper worries that any fingerprints left behind could make Cooper look guilty.
Cooper decides the phone is the most incriminating object because Cooper has no innocent explanation for touching it. Cooper retrieves a paper towel from the kitchen and tries to wipe the phone clean, but the process is awkward without gloves, and Cooper cannot be sure every print is gone.
Cooper chooses to exit through the front door rather than sneak out the back, hoping a casual departure will seem less suspicious. As Cooper leaves, Cooper notices a door camera above the entrance and realizes the camera recorded Cooper entering and leaving Ken’s house.
Cooper initially panics, but then reasons that if Ken was shot at least a day earlier, the camera footage may prove Cooper arrived after the murder. Cooper considers calling the police but decides to go home first and check the garage, connecting the situation to Pike’s imprisonment and Zane’s injuries. Before driving away, Cooper sends a text message.
