Chapter 17
Overview
Cooper tries to exercise away his anxiety over losing his job, but the gym only highlights Cooper’s unresolved secrecy and temptation. Jesse encourages Cooper to see the job loss as a chance for reinvention, while Cooper looks for escape through the firing range and delays telling Debbie the truth.
The chapter also reveals that Cooper owns a hidden, contentious gun and that Cooper is already keeping secrets from Debbie. Cindy’s comment that Debbie was at the gym earlier raises the possibility that Cooper’s wandering attention may not be as private as Cooper thinks.
Summary
After running five miles at Titan Fitness, Cooper still feels no relief from his stress. He reflects that Jesse encouraged him to join the gym so they could get back in shape together, and although the workouts have helped Cooper physically, they do not solve the anxiety caused by losing his job.
Cooper notices a woman on an elliptical looking at him appreciatively, and Cooper looks back until she winks, prompting Cooper to look away and retreat to Jesse. Cooper tells Jesse that he is leaving because Cooper wants to go home and “get this over with,” meaning Cooper knows he must eventually tell Debbie about his resignation being accepted.
Jesse tries to reassure Cooper that losing the dead-end job may become an opportunity to find something better. Cooper remains unconvinced and dreads the effort of job hunting, but Cooper suggests that he and Jesse go to the firing range over the weekend because shooting might help Cooper release tension.
Cooper explains that owning a gun has been a major conflict in Cooper and Debbie’s marriage. Debbie opposed the purchase because of safety concerns, but Cooper bought it after neighborhood burglaries, agreeing to keep it locked in the garage and use it only at the range; the children do not know the gun exists.
After showering, Cooper prepares to go home before dinner but still does not know what to tell Debbie. Cooper thinks Debbie has recently seemed fragile and distracted, which Cooper uses as a reason not to be fully honest with Debbie yet.
On the way out, Cooper again notices the attractive woman, then forces himself to look away when the woman winks. At the front desk, Cindy mentions that Debbie was at the gym earlier, and Cooper senses an edge in Cindy’s voice. Worried Cindy may have noticed Cooper’s behavior, Cooper leaves immediately to avoid doing anything worse.
