Chapter 34

Overview

Debbie fills her unemployed morning with gardening, revealing that her backyard includes opium poppies that Debbie harvests for opium. Debbie then tries to reconnect with Harley over lunch, but a scene at Jo Dolan’s house interrupts her trip.

Jo’s prized rose garden has been destroyed by Japanese beetles just as a photographer arrives, and Debbie privately reveals that Debbie caused the infestation with hidden traps. The chapter reinforces Debbie’s escalating pattern of retaliation and her calm satisfaction in covertly harming rivals.

Summary

With Debbie no longer working on her advice column, Debbie spends the morning gardening, a task Debbie finds calming and predictable. Debbie reflects on her carefully cultivated opium poppies, explaining their yearly cycle and revealing that Debbie harvests the pods not only for seeds but also for opium.

After clearing leaves from the yard, Debbie checks the local Hingham Household website for news about Coach Robert Pike but instead finds that the compromising video of Garrett and Sierra is still posted. Wanting company, Debbie texts Harley and offers to bring lunch, reassuring Harley that there will be no avocados after Debbie’s previous food-poisoning incident.

Debbie prepares a salad with vegetables and miso ranch dressing, then drives toward Harley’s house in Rockland. On the way, Debbie notices a commotion outside Jo Dolan’s home and stops to investigate, leaving the food in the car.

Debbie finds Jo arguing with a photographer who refuses to shoot Jo’s garden because it is overrun with Japanese beetles. Jo insists that Jo has the best rose garden in Hingham, but the infestation is obvious, and neighbors gather to watch.

When Jo accuses Debbie of causing the infestation because Debbie was jealous over the stolen photo shoot, Debbie feigns innocence and frames the disaster as karma. Debbie privately confirms that Debbie buried three beetle traps in Jo’s mulch, attracting the swarm and ruining Jo’s chance at the garden feature.
