Chapter 60
Overview
Debbie leaves the Zeta Pi fire behind and moves directly into the next phase of her revenge, ignoring Cooper’s desperate attempts to reach her. Harley invites Debbie to dinner, but Debbie believes Harley is deceiving her and accepts with dangerous intent. The chapter shifts the threat away from the fraternity and toward Harley, while the gun becomes the center of Debbie’s next frame-up.
Summary
After finishing her task at the Zeta Pi fraternity house, Debbie drives south on I-95 toward home with the radio playing. She believes she has completed one stage of her plan and is ready for the next step in what she calls her healing: teaching someone a lesson that person will never forget.
Debbie explains that she turned off her phone near the fraternity house so no one could prove she was there around the time of the fire. When Debbie turns the phone back on, Debbie finds many frantic calls and texts from Cooper, including an all-caps apology begging her to call him. Debbie dismisses the apology as too late and decides Cooper will be dealt with soon.
Harley calls Debbie while Debbie is on the highway, coincidentally before Debbie has a chance to call Harley herself. Harley invites Debbie to dinner that evening, asks about allergies, and tells Debbie to arrive by six. Debbie accepts, privately noting that Cooper and the kids can take care of their own dinner.
As Debbie drives through traffic, Debbie reflects on her earlier excitement about befriending Harley and realizes she was wrong to trust her. Debbie now sees Harley as a terrible person and believes Harley has nerve for thinking Debbie does not understand what Harley is doing.
Debbie glances toward the glove compartment, where she has been keeping the gun she took from its hiding place. Debbie has handled it only with leather gloves to avoid leaving her own fingerprints and to preserve the fingerprints already on it. Debbie decides that tonight will be the last time she uses the gun, and that the next person who picks it up will find it as evidence.
