Chapter 2
Overview
Debbie’s morning exposes the strain in her relationships with both daughters: Lexi keeps Debbie at a sarcastic distance, while Izzy hides that she has been kicked off the soccer team. The revelation raises deeper concerns when Lexi reports rumors that Coach Pike has been intruding on girls in the locker room. Debbie’s protective instincts sharpen around both Izzy’s situation and Lexi’s boyfriend Zane, just as neighbor Brett Carlson approaches to create the next disturbance.
Summary
On a Wednesday morning, Debbie explains that her older daughter, Lexi, has forbidden morning conversation since freshman year. Debbie obeys the rule while eating cereal and preparing for photographers from Home Gardening, who are coming to photograph her yard. The attention matters to Debbie because gardening gives her a source of pride separate from motherhood.
Lexi breaks her own silence to ask why Debbie is dressed up, then undercuts the pleasant moment by criticizing the cans Debbie has collected for a school food drive. Debbie’s younger daughter, Isabel, known as Izzy, enters in a rush with only an apple for breakfast. When Debbie says she will pick Izzy up after soccer, Izzy hesitates and reveals indirectly that something is wrong.
Lexi blurts out that Izzy was kicked off the soccer team. Debbie is shocked because Izzy has played since kindergarten and is highly skilled. Izzy panics when Debbie says she will call Coach Pike, so Debbie promises not to call him, while privately deciding the promise does not prevent Debbie from going to Coach Pike’s office in person.
After Izzy leaves, Debbie asks Lexi what happened. Lexi says she does not know, but adds that Izzy may be better off because Coach Pike is supposedly a creep. Lexi reports that her friend Mira said Coach Pike repeatedly and suspiciously walked into the girls’ locker room while players were changing, leaving Debbie disturbed and unsure whether Izzy should be on the team at all.
Lexi then complains about Debbie’s loud chewing, prompting Debbie to mourn how far their relationship has fallen from Lexi’s affectionate childhood. A car horn announces Lexi’s boyfriend, Zane, who drives a run-down red Kia and never comes inside. Debbie dislikes Zane, worries about the way he looks at Lexi, and resolves to protect both daughters whether they accept it or not.
After Lexi leaves without saying goodbye, Debbie locks the door behind her, as usual. Debbie notices neighbor Brett Carlson stomping down the shared driveway toward her front door, signaling that another confrontation is about to interrupt the morning.
