Chapter 13

Overview

Harley’s view of book club exposes Rochelle, Sloane, and Tabitha’s condescension toward Debbie, especially as they prepare to push Debbie out for being less educated. Before they can complete the humiliation, all three women who ate Debbie’s food become violently ill, while Debbie remains untouched and pleased.

The chapter reframes Debbie’s “forgotten” avocado warning as possibly protective for Harley and strongly suggests Debbie poisoned the sandwiches to sabotage the women and Rochelle’s mayoral party.

Summary

Harley narrates from Rochelle’s book club, silently labeling the women “rich bitches” while Rochelle lectures about Velvet Moon as a supposed King Lear retelling. Rochelle, Sloane, and Tabitha treat literary difficulty as a status marker, while Debbie mildly defends liking the book despite never having read King Lear.

Rochelle uses Debbie’s lack of college education to belittle Debbie, and Harley notices that Debbie seems kinder than the others even if she is flighty. Harley reflects that she lied about reading the book and relied on CliffsNotes, though she recognizes Debbie actually read and understood it better than the women mocking her.

When Harley suggests choosing shorter books, Sloane rejects the idea and argues that the club should not “dumb down” its choices for less educated people. Sloane then implies Debbie should be excluded, and Rochelle begins formally pushing Debbie out of the club.

Before Rochelle can finish, Rochelle suddenly feels hot, turns pale and green, and runs to the bathroom vomiting, knocking over expensive champagne bottles on the way. Sloane and Tabitha soon appear ill too; Debbie, who is not sick, cheerfully suggests a bug is going around.

As Harley and Debbie leave, Sloane and Tabitha flee, with Tabitha vomiting in Rochelle’s front yard. Harley privately suspects food poisoning from Debbie’s sandwiches because Harley did not eat them and Debbie apparently did not either, but Harley says nothing and feels grateful that Debbie’s supposed forgetfulness about the avocado allergy kept Harley from eating them.
