Chapter 23
Overview
Cooper returns late with cold fries and gives Debbie explanations that Debbie recognizes as lies, deepening Debbie’s mistrust. Cooper then reveals that Cooper quit after Ken Bryant refused to promote Cooper, which creates a financial crisis because Debbie has not told Cooper that Debbie was also fired.
Instead of confessing, Debbie hides Debbie’s job loss to protect Cooper and reassures Cooper that Ken made a terrible mistake. The chapter shifts Debbie’s anxiety into vengeful certainty, as Debbie fixates on making Ken regret pushing Cooper out.
Summary
An hour after Debbie’s confrontation with Lexi, Cooper returns home after being gone for two hours on what was supposed to be a fast-food run. Debbie is suspicious because Cooper has disappeared before with excuses, and because his location sharing was turned off. Cooper claims Cooper was driving around to clear his head and blames Findly’s failure on dead zones, but Debbie recognizes both explanations as lies.
In the kitchen, Debbie and Cooper sit with diet cola and untouched fries. Cooper shakily admits that after Ken Bryant refused to promote Cooper, Cooper threatened to quit and then actually did. Debbie is stunned because Cooper is not usually impulsive, and Cooper explains that Ken said Cooper was not management material, did not need Cooper, and would never make Cooper a partner.
Debbie becomes furious on Cooper’s behalf, insisting Ken has made a ridiculous mistake. Cooper, however, wants to move past the humiliation and find a new job, trying to frame the loss as a possible blessing because Cooper had no future at Ken’s company.
Then Cooper says Debbie’s salary from Dear Debbie can support them until Cooper finds work. Debbie realizes Cooper still does not know Debbie was fired. Debbie almost confesses but decides Cooper is already too miserable, so Debbie keeps the news to herself and tells Debbie that both of them will look for work and manage somehow.
Debbie comforts Cooper by telling Cooper that Ken has lost his best employee. Although Cooper remains doubtful, Debbie becomes certain that Ken Bryant will deeply regret what Ken has done, leaving Debbie’s anger focused on him.
