Chapter 44
Overview
Debbie turns Lexi’s confession into a plan for retaliation by stealing Lexi’s phone and posing as her to lure Zane out at night. Zane’s threatening messages confirm the blackmail, pushing Debbie from protective anger into deliberate action.
By choosing a deserted playground with no cameras, Debbie escalates from scheming to setting a trap, signaling that her revenge against Zane may become dangerous.
Summary
At midnight, Debbie waits until Cooper appears asleep before sneaking out of bed. Because Cooper may have noticed her absence after she drugged him the previous night, Debbie moves carefully and uses clothes she hid in the living room so she can leave without waking him.
Before going out, Debbie enters Lexi’s bedroom and takes Lexi’s phone from the nightstand. Lexi sleeps deeply, and Debbie uses the passcode Lexi previously provided, relieved that the code still works.
Debbie briefly considers searching Lexi’s photos for the compromising images Zane has used to blackmail her, but Debbie stops herself, deciding her purpose is not to snoop but to protect Lexi. Debbie opens Lexi’s messages with Zane and sees his latest threat, which confirms his coercion and intensifies Debbie’s rage.
Using Lexi’s phone, Debbie texts Zane while pretending to be Lexi. Debbie suggests that Lexi has reconsidered and is willing to sneak out with her parents’ car to meet Zane, and Zane responds eagerly.
Debbie arranges the meeting at the playground in the Hingham Shipyard, a location Debbie knows will be deserted at night and lacks visible cameras. Zane agrees to arrive in twenty minutes, giving Debbie the opportunity to confront him on her own terms.
