Chapter 58

Overview

Debbie tours Zeta Pi while preparing to burn it down, believing the destruction of the house may finally answer the trauma Hutch caused there decades earlier. Lennox's earnest explanation of the fraternity's sexual-assault prevention policies complicates Debbie's certainty that the current brothers deserve punishment.

Despite this moment of doubt, Debbie deceives Lennox by claiming Debbie left her purse upstairs and gains the chance to carry out the arson plan.

Summary

Debbie arrives at Zeta Pi intending to commit arson, though she has never done anything like it before. Punishing Zane did not relieve the pressure in Debbie's mind, so Debbie decides that destroying the fraternity house where her life fell apart may finally bring peace.

Debbie plans the fire carefully while trying to avoid killing anyone innocent. Debbie carries a cigarette taped to matches in her purse and intends to return upstairs alone, light the cigarette with a desk lighter, and leave it on papers in a bed so the fire will look accidental and spread after Debbie has gone.

Lennox continues Debbie's tour by taking Debbie into the basement, a meeting and party space with couches, a small stage, and posters warning guests not to leave drinks unattended. When Debbie notices the poster, Lennox explains that Zeta Pi now takes sexual assault prevention seriously by banning punch bowls, encouraging unopened cans or bottles, closing upper floors during parties, and investigating any brother suspected of drugging or assaulting women.

Lennox's sincerity unsettles Debbie's assumptions about the fraternity. Although Debbie doubts that much could have changed since Hutch and his brothers were there, Lennox's anger and the house's safety rules make Debbie question, at least briefly, whether the current members deserve her planned revenge.

At the end of the tour, Debbie pretends she left her purse upstairs. Lennox, trusting Debbie and seeing Debbie as harmless, lets Debbie go back alone while Lennox studies on the sofa. Debbie climbs the stairs toward the room where Debbie intends to set the fire.
