Chapter 50
Overview
Debbie tries to channel her anger and unemployment into a new revenge-themed app, but a crisis at the school abruptly overtakes her plans. Izzy reports that a drunk senior has crashed into the building, forcing Debbie to race to retrieve Izzy and Lexi.
The crash suggests Debbie’s private schemes may be spilling into public danger, especially because Debbie immediately fears the injured student may be someone she knows. The chapter shifts the tension from domestic manipulation to a potentially catastrophic consequence involving the children’s school.
Summary
Debbie spends the morning developing an app idea called Punish Your Husband, which came to her while driving back from the shipyard. Because Debbie is no longer working, she sees the project as a possible source of money and fills her time with coding, gardening, and tending to her opium poppies.
Debbie’s routine is interrupted when Izzy calls from school in a panic. Izzy explains that a senior boy, apparently drunk, has crashed his car into the school, prompting emergency responders to arrive and the school to send students home.
Izzy tells Debbie that students are being held in their classrooms until someone picks them up. Debbie texts Lexi to say she is on the way, then grabs her keys and shifts into crisis mode.
As Debbie drives toward the high school, Debbie tries to deny a growing fear about the identity of the injured senior. The details—an impaired senior crashing at nine in the morning—make Debbie suspect the accident may involve someone connected to recent events, raising the stakes of her earlier actions.
