Chapter 9

Overview

Debbie channels her rage into action, stopping at a nursery to buy Japanese beetle trap refills under the pretense that they are for a friend. Her continued fixation on Jo Dolan and Jo’s roses gives the purchase an ominous context.

A checkout-line confrontation reveals that Debbie’s anger is escalating: when an entitled woman cuts in front of her, Debbie intimidates her into backing down. The incident relieves the strange buzzing in Debbie’s head, suggesting that confrontation is becoming a disturbing emotional release.

Summary

Unable to get drunk, Debbie decides to cope with her anger by going to Titan Fitness, the local gym she joined six months earlier with Cooper. Exercise has become a substitute for medication and a way for Debbie to feel stronger and less weak.

Before going to the gym, Debbie stops at the nursery where she usually buys gardening supplies. Although she claims she does not need anything for her own garden, Debbie asks Lou for Japanese beetle traps and says they are for a friend. Lou directs her to pest-control products, and Debbie chooses three boxes of trap refills rather than full traps, insisting that the refills are all she needs.

Debbie grows impatient in Louise’s slow checkout line because she still wants to work out, shower, change, and attend book club by twelve thirty. Debbie blames Jo Dolan for the delay and her bad mood, remaining fixated on Jo after their confrontation.

When Debbie is almost at the register, an older woman cuts in front of her with a small bag of seeds and argues that she had been there earlier. The woman’s entitlement triggers the same buzzing in Debbie’s head that Debbie felt while speaking to Jo. Debbie confronts the woman firmly, threatening to make her move if she will not return to the back of the line.

The woman retreats after seeing Debbie’s expression, mutters that Debbie is a psychopath, and goes to the back of the line while other customers applaud. Debbie notices that the buzzing in her head has disappeared, linking confrontation and intimidation with a sudden sense of relief.
