Chapter 29

Overview

Debbie ignores Garrett's escalating messages about the posted video and redirects herself into a carefully managed family breakfast. The morning gives Debbie a rare sense of connection when both Izzy and Lexi accept pancakes and Lexi chooses a ride from Debbie instead of Zane.

Debbie's thoughts remain dangerous: Debbie blames Coach Pike for Izzy's eating issues and implies Pike will soon be dealt with. Debbie also forces Zane away but senses his involvement with Lexi is not over.

Summary

Debbie starts the morning by making boxed pancakes with milk and cinnamon, deliberately focusing on this domestic task instead of Garrett Meers. After seeing more than one hundred unread texts and multiple voice messages from Garrett, Debbie deletes them all and blocks Garrett's number, deciding his crisis is no longer her responsibility because she has been fired.

Izzy enters first and clearly wants pancakes, but Izzy initially refuses because Izzy believes she needs to lose weight to get back on the soccer team. Debbie blames Coach Pike for giving Izzy an eating disorder and privately thinks that Pike will not be a problem much longer. Debbie longs for simpler days when affection could fix her daughters' pain.

Lexi then comes in without her headphones and asks Debbie for a ride to school. Debbie avoids mentioning Zane, correctly sensing that questioning Lexi would cause conflict, and instead agrees. When Lexi accepts pancakes, Izzy changes her mind and asks for one too, making Debbie intensely happy.

Zane arrives outside, honking from his badly parked Kia with loud music blasting. Lexi asks Debbie to tell Zane that Debbie is driving Lexi today, and Debbie goes outside to confront him. Debbie tells Zane to leave, and Zane backs out suddenly, nearly running over Debbie's foot.

After Zane speeds away, Debbie hopes this will be the last time he comes to the house, where Debbie resents his presence, appetite, and drinking. However, Debbie has a bad feeling that Zane will return, leaving the morning's small family victory undercut by unease.
