Debbie is baking brownies when the front door slams, earlier than Cooper should be home and while Lexi is away at the Hingham Shipyard. Debbie identifies the arriving footsteps as Izzy’s and calls to her younger daughter.

Izzy enters the kitchen unusually quiet. When Debbie comments on the brownies, Izzy complains about them and refuses any, which surprises Debbie because Debbie has not baked them in nearly a year and most children would welcome fresh brownies.

Debbie asks what happened with soccer, and Izzy claims she simply got sick of it and quit. Debbie does not believe this because Izzy has loved soccer since kindergarten, and Lexi has already said Izzy was kicked off the team. Izzy insists Lexi is wrong, but her concern sharpens when she asks whether Debbie will call Coach Pike.

Debbie promises not to call Coach Pike, and Izzy relaxes. Debbie considers asking whether Coach Pike ever peeked at the girls in the locker room, as Lexi’s friend alleged, but Debbie decides Izzy would not tell the truth even if something happened. Instead, Debbie asks whether Izzy needs help with homework, and Izzy declines.

After Izzy leaves for her room, Debbie reflects that her children are unlikely to care much about Debbie’s own troubles, including the failed photo shoot and the loss of her newspaper job. Debbie also notes that she keeps promises to her children: Debbie will not call Coach Pike, but she resolves to drive to him instead.
