Chapter 56
Overview
Debbie infiltrates the Zeta Pi fraternity house while pretending to be a journalist, using the tour to confront the site of her past trauma. Lennox’s comments about fraternity accountability intensify Debbie’s belief that the whole organization deserves punishment.
Though Debbie nearly breaks down when shown a bedroom resembling the one where Hutch hurt Debbie, Debbie recovers and converts the moment into resolve. By secretly leaving Debbie’s purse near a lighter, Debbie sets up a plan to return and burn down the fraternity house.
Summary
Debbie enters the Zeta Pi fraternity house under the false pretense of writing an article about fraternity life. Lennox Newberry, the fraternity president, welcomes Debbie warmly, unaware that Debbie has come with destructive intentions.
As Lennox begins the tour, Debbie compares the ordinary, shabby house to the place that traumatized her twenty-five years earlier. Debbie asks pointed questions about fraternity accountability, and Lennox says that one brother’s wrongdoing reflects on the whole fraternity, which reinforces Debbie’s belief that Zeta Pi would have protected Hutch if the brothers knew what Hutch had done.
Lennox shows Debbie the first floor, then offers to take Debbie upstairs to see the bedrooms. Debbie dreads returning to that part of the house but forces herself to continue because Debbie believes Debbie cannot complete the plan without doing so.
Inside a small bedroom, Debbie is overwhelmed by memories of Hutch’s assault. Debbie nearly panics, drops Debbie’s notepad, and struggles to steady herself while Lennox misreads Debbie’s distress as hunger or illness. When Lennox suggests ending the tour, Debbie regains control and insists on seeing the basement.
Before leaving the room, Debbie notices a lighter on a desk and decides that this room is the place to begin. Debbie secretly leaves Debbie’s purse behind so Debbie can later return alone, intending to retrieve it as an excuse and burn down Zeta Pi.
