Chapter 7

Overview

Debbie’s long-awaited garden photo shoot collapses when Home Gardening cancels without telling her and chooses Jo Dolan’s rose garden instead. The humiliation intensifies Debbie’s rivalry with Jo and shifts Debbie from anxious anticipation into active confrontation.

After discovering that a wine bottle has been emptied and refilled with water, Debbie also becomes convinced Zane is secretly drinking in the house. The chapter deepens Debbie’s paranoia and resentment, ending with Debbie heading toward Jo in anger.

Summary

Debbie prepares for the Home Gardening photo shoot, inspecting her garden and noting that the flowers she called windflowers are not really windflowers, a secret even Cooper does not know. She worries her dress looks bloodstained but decides not to change, then makes coffee for the expected magazine crew.

While waiting, Debbie sees elderly neighbor Bev Petrie on the ground across the street and rushes over, fearing a fall. Bev is only weeding, complains that Jo Dolan criticized her crabgrass, and Debbie promises to help with the weeds later. Bev reminds Debbie how jealous Jo will be about the photo shoot, which secretly pleases Debbie because Jo often boasts about having the best lawn on the block.

Back home, the photographer still has not arrived. Debbie waits anxiously, checks the appointment email, then calls Home Gardening. After delays with the receptionist and hold music, Debbie reaches Nita Geisler and learns the shoot was canceled, though no one told Debbie.

Nita explains that after visiting Debbie, the magazine team saw Josephine Dolan’s rose garden and decided roses would make a more classic photo spread. Debbie realizes Jo has taken the opportunity from her, and Nita offers only a free trial subscription to the magazine, requiring a credit card. Debbie hangs up rather than continue.

Humiliated and furious, Debbie tries to calm herself with wine from a Christmas bottle stored above the refrigerator. The cork is already loose, and when Debbie drinks from it, the bottle contains water instead of wine. Debbie concludes Zane, Lexi’s boyfriend, must have stolen the alcohol and replaced it, then returns to fuming over Jo and decides to go confront her immediately.
