Chapter 4
Overview
Garrett Meers unexpectedly summons Debbie to the newspaper office, creating a new source of anxiety on the morning of the garden photo shoot. The chapter also reveals Debbie’s technological background and her invasive Findly tracking app, deepening the sense that Debbie’s protective domestic role has a controlling edge.
Cooper appears loving and supportive, but his hidden phone call and nervousness about confronting Ken introduce quiet tension around his life outside the home. Debbie’s attention finally returns to Brett’s fuse-box trouble, keeping the neighborhood conflict active in the background.
Summary
Debbie hears her phone ringing in the kitchen and expects a last-minute call about the Home Gardening photo shoot, but the caller is Garrett Meers, her boss at the Hingham Household. Debbie explains that she writes the part-time advice column Dear Debbie, a job she enjoys despite once having studied computer science at MIT before dropping out.
Debbie reflects on still using her technical skills by making apps, especially Findly, a tracking app installed on Izzy’s and Lexi’s phones. Debbie values the app because it lets Debbie monitor the girls’ current and past locations, and Cooper also has it on his phone with his permission.
Garrett asks Debbie to come into the office as soon as possible, but he refuses to explain why before hanging up. The sudden request makes Debbie uneasy, though Debbie postpones dealing with it because the garden photo shoot is imminent and Debbie also has a neighborhood book club meeting afterward.
Cooper enters the kitchen, and Debbie shifts into her usual domestic routine by offering to make Cooper cereal and helping with Cooper’s tie. Cooper receives a phone call, but Cooper angles the phone away from Debbie, silences it, and puts it away, which Debbie notices.
Cooper warmly praises Debbie’s upcoming garden feature and kisses Debbie, reassuring Debbie’s confidence and underscoring their affectionate marriage. The moment turns practical when Debbie reminds Cooper about his important meeting with Ken Bryant, where Cooper is supposed to ask for a partner share at the accounting firm; Debbie urges Cooper to be firm, though Cooper seems apprehensive.
As Cooper speaks, Debbie becomes distracted by an electrician’s truck passing the house, presumably arriving for Brett after his earlier accusation about the damaged fuse box. Debbie privately hopes the damage is not worse than Brett thought.
