Summary
Debbie walks from her house at the top of the block to Jo Dolan’s house at the bottom, still dressed for the canceled Home Gardening photo shoot but changing into flats. Debbie notices again that Jo’s house is plain and old, except for the striking rose garden that drew Nita Geisler’s attention.
Jo takes her time answering the door and greets Debbie with open irritation. Debbie confronts Jo about speaking to the magazine while Nita was visiting Debbie’s garden, accusing Jo of stealing the article and photo shoot that Debbie had arranged.
Jo denies wrongdoing and says she merely invited the magazine to see “a real garden.” Instead of apologizing, Jo insults Debbie’s garden and appearance, implying Debbie would have embarrassed herself in the magazine.
Debbie becomes increasingly enraged, experiencing a strange buzzing sensation in her head as Jo continues to mock her. Feeling weak and humiliated by recent failures with her children, her finances, and the magazine cancellation, Debbie interprets Jo’s actions as a deliberate attack.
Debbie warns Jo about karma, defining it as “what goes around comes around.” Jo laughs, dismisses the idea as loser talk, promises to send Debbie the article, and slams the door in Debbie’s face, leaving Debbie furious and humiliated.
