Chapter 19
Overview
Cooper returns home desperate to avoid telling Debbie the full truth about losing the partnership and quitting his job. Debbie is also concealing things, claiming both a successful photo shoot and a grocery trip despite signs that something is off.
The chapter deepens the secrecy between them: Cooper lies by omission, uses fast food as an excuse to leave, and disables Debbie's location-tracking app so Cooper can go somewhere hidden. Their marriage shifts further from routine domestic trust into mutual concealment and escalating danger.
Summary
Cooper comes home to a dark house expecting Debbie to be in the kitchen. Cooper is relieved at first because Cooper dreads being questioned about the conversation with Ken, but Cooper immediately feels trapped and wants to escape to the one place Cooper thinks will calm him.
Before Cooper can leave, Debbie arrives and says Debbie was late because the grocery store was crowded, though Cooper notices Debbie is carrying no groceries. Debbie also says the photo shoot went great, hiding any trouble from Cooper. Cooper, hoping to avoid scrutiny, asks about Debbie's day first and notices Debbie is unusually quiet.
Debbie then asks about Ken. Cooper cannot admit that Cooper quit after losing the partnership, so Cooper tells Debbie only that the partnership is off the table. Cooper privately recognizes the family may be in serious financial trouble, since Hingham is expensive and Cooper may need a new job without a good reference.
To avoid more questions, Cooper asks about dinner, then claims Cooper is too hungry to wait and wants fast food. Debbie surprisingly agrees, saying Debbie will make sandwiches for herself and Izzy while Lexi eats out with Zane. Debbie asks for french fries, which makes Cooper feel guilty because Cooper is lying to Debbie.
Before leaving, Cooper sends a quick text, grabs Cooper's keys, and thinks about Findly, the tracking app Debbie installed on their phones. Cooper turns Findly off so Debbie cannot see Cooper's location, planning to lie about a dead zone if asked and making clear that Cooper is heading somewhere Debbie must not know about.
