Chapter 37
Overview
Debbie returns from Harley’s apartment shaken by the discovery of Cooper’s T-shirt and increasingly convinced that Cooper has been deceiving her. Her petty cruelty surfaces in small victories against a tailgater and Jo Dolan, while her phone call with Cooper exposes their strained finances, secrets, and lack of trust.
The chapter ends with a major dark implication: although Cooper believes Ken Bryant is merely out of town, Debbie knows nobody will ever speak to Ken again. This shifts Ken’s disappearance from suspicious absence to apparent death and suggests Debbie may be connected to it.
Summary
Debbie drives home from Harley’s apartment unable to stop thinking about Cooper’s T-shirt in Harley’s bedroom and the familiar smell on it. The discovery deepens Debbie’s suspicion that Cooper has been lying, especially because Cooper previously turned off location sharing on his phone.
On the way home, a tailgater harasses Debbie at every stop sign. Instead of letting him pass, Debbie deliberately slows and blocks him until the impatient driver swerves around her, runs a stop sign, and is immediately stopped by a waiting police officer. Debbie takes pleasure in the outcome and leaves the driver to receive the ticket.
Back in the neighborhood, Debbie passes Jo Dolan’s garden and sees that the Japanese beetle infestation has become severe. Jo looks miserable, and Debbie concludes that Jo’s planned rose photo shoot is effectively ruined.
Once home, Debbie calls Cooper, still fixated on the T-shirt but unable to ask him about it directly. Cooper sounds concerned, and Debbie reflects that he has always adored her, while also admitting that both of them have kept secrets. Debbie also chooses not to tell Cooper about Coach Pike’s arrest.
Debbie asks when Cooper will be home, and Cooper says he may go to the gym first. Debbie then brings up Ken Bryant and whether Cooper might ask Ken about getting his job back, but Cooper says Ken is out of town until Monday. Debbie privately thinks Cooper will never speak to Ken again, implying that Ken is dead and that Debbie knows more than Cooper does.
